I don't (yet) have perfect pitch, but I do clearly hear the sound "colors" David L Burge teaches in his ear training course. I believe that training your ears to pick up these sound colors is _the_ key to perfect pitch, because if you don't know how the different pitches sound different, how can you reliably determine the pitch? Just like when you visually see the color red and can determine that it is red, you can hear the pitch D# and determine that it is D# based on how it sounds.
