Long Drive Champion & Golf Instructor John Marshall demonstrates the Mike Austin swing method. www.GolfConversations.com publisher Robert Blumenthal was the man behind the video camera, shot on location at the Affiniti Golf Academy at Steel Canyon Golf Club in Atlanta, GA. The end of the video provides contact information for John Marshall.

ABOUT MIKE AUSTIN: At the 1974 United States National Seniors Open Championship (predecessor to the Senior PGA Open), at the age of 64, Mike Austin drove a golf ball 515 yards, on level ground, with a persimmon head driver measuring 43 1/2" in length. The shot was favored by a tail wind thought to be about 25 miles per hour. It occurred on a course in Las Vegas known then as the Winterwood Golf Course. It has since been renamed Desert Rose, and the hole on which it was accomplished is a long flat slight dog leg to the right where the green is visible from the tee about 450 yards away. The tee shot landed just short of the green and rolled roughly 65 yards past it. It was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest ever in a competition sanctioned by the USGA.

  • I know that John is heavily involved with The First Tee program so I'm certain that he does teach juniors.

  • Great explanation, John. :-)

  • This is completely right on. I've been playing for 5 years, struggled to get down to a 9 handicap, decided to take a slightly stronger grip than I had and eliminate forearm rotation "release" through impact and within two weeks I'm down to 4.6 handicap and getting lower. Hitting the ball so much further, 285 average carry and way straighter. I highly recommend amateurs take this advice.
