Euronews reports optimistic comments by U.N. UNDER-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe's upbeat assessment of the political climate in Cyprus following the election of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, and on the opening of the Ledra Street Crossing in Nicosia. Cyprus morning news was still reporting uncertainty about whether the Ledra Street opening would actually take place or not on 3rd April 2008, for the first time since British forces placed the barbed wire to divide Nicosia's main shopping Street in 1963. This is as agreed, but it simply replaces the previous barrier with a border between the two sides, with passports needed to cross - hardly free movement or an actual 'bringing down of barriers', but one symbolic step in that direction.
Not many people may understand the significance of this video but I certainly appreciate its content. I was in Ledra Street on 4 May and was able to cross the border exactly a month after it had opened.
Many thanks for posting this on YouTube. It may not get 86 million view (or even 860) but some people will enjoy this historic and symbolic moment in our time.
