Canon 7D firmware update

You will want to check your digital camera. If it's not running the current version you will want to update. These updates contain many new features and bug fixes. I know it's well worth doing on the high end DSLRs from Canon and Nikon.

What changes in the camera if you update the firmware??

@TheLexa1995 All changes are listed on every update. Things like auto focus, white balance, .....anything software related can be changed with firmware. Read the changlog on their website if you want to see changes for your model.

will upgrading from 1.2.3 to 1.2.5 delete my settings?

@marstaszewski I have done this 3 time and my settings have not changed. You will not see a change. Hope that helps.

first time user, was wondering if you need to format your card on the camera first before copying the card over or doing the update?

@thevudoo You do not need to format first. The camera should detect it. It would be better if you used a clean card if you have one.
