Telly Savalas - If 1975
Aristotelis "Telly" Savalas (January 21, 1922 -- January 22, 1994) was an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award -winning American film and television actor and singer.
Best known for playing the title role in the popular 1970s crime drama Kojak.

His version of Bread's 'If' produced by Snuff Garrett was #1 in Europe for 10 weeks in 1975.

If a picture paints a thousand words
Then why can't I paint you?
The words will never show
The you I've come to know.

And if a face could launch a thousand ships
Then where am I to go?
There's no one home but you;
You're all that's left me too.

And when my love for life is running dry
You come and pour yourself on me.

If a man could be two places at one time
Hey baby I'd be with you tomorrow and today
beside you all the way.

And if the world should stop revolving
you know spinning
spinning slowly down to die
I'd spend the end with you
And when the world was through

Then one by one the stars would all go out
Then you and I would simply fly away.

  • I clicked on this thinking it would be Rudyard Kipling's poem: "If you can keep your head about you, while all others are losing theirs, and blaming you... yours is the world, and all that's in it. And, what's more, you'll be a man, my son." Telly would have nailed that.

It's still better than the original record -- and better than anything "sung" by William Shatner.

  • That's why they call me Terry Tibbs.Goodnight, much lav!

  • Elton John's cover of the Beatles 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' was the number one hit the week I was born. It's an unfortunate coincidence; I hate Elton John, and have pretty much completely disregarded the Beatles. I did find another gem sung by the late great Telly Savalis from later that year; he was, and will always be, more awesome than Elton John and all 5 Beatles combined.
