This is a mini documentary about how a group of people started a non-profit art center after visiting co-ops in Mali, Africa. Artists rallied around the idea-donating thousands of dollars in equipment including a dark room, painting easels and a kiln. Tacoma Art Place is a non-profit art center in the heart of the revitalized MLK neighborhood in Tacoma, WA. The mission is to provide access to equipment and training that will allow more people to affordably explore their creativity and artistic ability. The outcome is empowerment, "People helping people."
Tacoma native Linda Danforth worked on this project for over a year after returning from Mali. The Mali journal is available on the World Trade Center Tacoma Web site. Credit unions including TAPCO, Woodstone and BECU supported the delegation. The amazing work of Carol Schillios was a part of the inspiration.
