Section 8 Protest - Champaign, IL 10-16-07

It was no surprise, but Champaign City Council voted 6-3 to repeal human rights protections for Section 8 recipients.
CU Citizens showed up to make noise.
Students for Designing a Society came out with an old-timey "Section 8" song, complete with trap set and clarinet.
Several impassioned pleas were made to city council.
They still voted 6-3.

Funny... a Canadian pissed off about social welfare in the U.S. (at least what's left of it). What is it that gets white guys so angry? What are you so afraid of? Is it that the violence of the past, the very history that gives you the privileges you have today, just gives you such fear and guilt that it can only manifest in the form of violent emotions? I guess if you're in Canada, you can afford to go see a doctor about it.

Where in the world do you live? Where I live if your caught using drugs or you don't take care of your yard or house you get kicked off of Sec. 8. The people that are on Sec 8 are the poorest of the poor. There little old ladies, The disabled & families that would be on the streets if they didn't have this help. Out of all the waist in government, the wars & the corporate welfare, why do people always pick on the poor?

It's usually the ones that call themselves Christians that complain the most.

I am happy someone finally mentioned that landlords benefit from section 8 even moreso than thier tenants because they actually get to pocket the money. And fyi not all or even most section 8 tenants are drug addicts or criminals. There are some really decent people on this program. But unfortuantely for them the bad ones get all the publicity.

people are really selfish, and greedy! Only thinking of themselves, and not the poor! Everyone on Sec 8 is NOT a criminal, drug addict, and violent people! You should be protesting the rapist that are released in neigborhoods around innocent children! Why pick on people who want to raise their children in nice communities! You should help create programs to change peoples lives around for a more positive future! Where do you expect these people to go? Maybe they can move in with you!

the Reason why poor people are picked on is because they can't defend themselves. Poor people can't afford Lawyers or lobbyists. Most poor people can't even afford computers to defend themselves on the internet. i'm having to type this at my public library and i'm sure soon enough these people are going to try and deny that to me to. they're gonna say I need to get off my lazy ass and get a job if i want to read or use the internet. they don't realize most of these people have jobs.

Section 8 sucks. I wish that HUD had to keep records on the number of Section 8 recipients who have committed crimes against the decent people in the once-safe neighborhoods that HUD destroyed. Many, many people who scrimped and saved to live in a safe neighborhood were robbed, raped, or killed when HUD paid a criminal to live in that neighborhood.

Section 8 needs to end.The tenants are either past or present psycho criminal drug bunnies gaming the system,but the slumlords and administrators of these lousy givaway programs benefit also.They destroy good neighborhoods y bringing in bad people who carelessly feed off the working class.
