To add channels, have you thought of multiplexing your slip-ring, or using a serial connection with a PIC or similar doing the en/de-coding between body & dome? This strategy could be used to reduce the number of physical connections that the slip-ring is handling.

Yep, I'm planning on using i2c at some point. I've done some testing, but until i move away from using Vex (which is i2c challenged), I'm stuck. Once I get my Futaba receiver I'll be switching to PICAXE/PIC.
