This is "Barwick Green" and is the theme music to the long-running BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers. It is a "maypole dance" from the suite My Native Heath, written in 1924 by the Yorkshire composer Arthur Wood, and named after Barwick-in-Elmet.

This recording used between 1950 and the 1990s was played by Sidney Torch and his Orchestra

The Sunday omnibus broadcast of The Archers starts with a more rustic, accordian -arranged rendition by The Yetties

  • i agree with billy connelly - this should soooo be the english national anthem!!!!

  • My favourite episode was the one in which the p;ros and cons of various types of manure were discussed. There was a lively controversy in Ambridge, and the older farmers were not about to concede to the young'uns about points relating to stench, attraction to insect pests, wandering old dogs, etc. Lord Home said it was the most fascinating study of the subject he had ever come across.

  • My Grandma loved this show and the song so much. Its going to be played at her funeral cos it was a big part of her life.

  • As a little kid of 5, i used to listen to the very exciting 'DICK BARTON--SPECIAL AGENT' from about 1946-to 1950, when they anounced it would be replaced by a new serial called --'THE ARCHERS' (an every-day story of country folk). I remember it so clearly because of the shock of loosing my hero's--DICK, JOCK ,& SNOWY. I said--I hope it won't last, and then my hero's will come back---still waiting---pass the tissues someone.

  • First dislike, for the most irritating noise to be broadcast over the airways (other than dubstep!)
