"We had a big storm blow thru on Monday and are just now finally up with reliable internet. We lost about 10 trees and the weather service said that we had an inch of hail. The winds blew the roof off a building up the road from us. Trees blew over the power lines and started fires. We had phone service, but the ham radios were great for keeping tabs on what was going on around us. The power went out and they were warning us that we could be with out power for a day or two. The property manager and the handy man had gone to the hardware store to get a chain saw to clean up. On the way there they had to cross the 4 lane divided highway, the lights were out, as they were crossing, a car coming south ran the intersection and creamed them. Lances wife got me and I ran out to get them, they were all right and just shook up, the car got totaled. While i was gone Tara was able to keep track of the accident on the ham that was tuned to the police frequency. We had all three radios working, one on the police, one on the fire dept, and one on the local repeater frequency. We ended up with our power back in about 8 hours, just in time to come on right after we got into a good sleep. OH WELL that's ok though, we like our milk cold!!!?!?!?!!? All is well now, though and the clean up is done around the apartment buildings. The radios were invaluable to us even though our situation was really not all that bad. They will definitely be even more useful if things get worse with another storm.
love to all
