It was definitely the spit valve. He empties it at 3:00.

It was the mic. Don't you think a trombone pro would ensure he'd emptied the horn before he started playing the melody? And if not, would be able to find an appropriate musical moment to empty it? It would be more amateurish (and ludicrous) to keep blowing, no matter the weird and awful sounds coming from your horn. Superb playing, despite the dopey sound engineer.

Yeah, he was definitely emptying it during the piano solo. It goes to show the kind of professionalism that's needed to play at his level--it would probably look amateurish if he emptied his horn in a rush between phrases.

But just absolutely blown away...taken in...just wonderful...the piano player makes it all effortless...oy, and the way gordon just literally sings with that trombone. probably the smoothest I've ever heard my instrument, throughout any recording I've ever come across..hell, even my own playing by far..this is the level I wanted to reach...the soul in this recording is amazing...with the breathing, and soft environment sounds..brought me to such a level of peace within..the most beautiful ending
