Sanatana means "eternal," never beginning nor ending. Dharma is from "dhri," meaning to "hold together," to "sustain." Sanatana Dharma eternally holds All together. The universal flow of Dharma, regardless of what name you call it, whether Dharma or some other name, has eternally existed. It has been before any of the great teachers were born. It is not better than, or alternative to, but is inclusive of all. Dharma is that out of which our earth and humanity itself emerged. Dharma not only is, but always was, and always will be. To live in alignment with, and to know the true nature of that Sanatana Dharma is one of the ways of describing the higher goal of life.

This video sums up the uniqueness of Hinduism: the only system of spirituality with no single founder, no clear beginnings, nor even any system of overarching principles that defines itself. It not only is eternal, but infinite as well, with no generalistic principles that bind it together. Sanatana Dharma includes everything from gnosticism, mystic meditation, esotericism, to even atheism.

Diversity is a hallmark of this great tradition.

Interestingly, the term "Sanatana Dharma" is thousands of years old, dating to the time of the writing of the Vedas. The term "Hinduism" was created by foreign people to refer to culture and geography, not just to their philosophies, religions or spiritual practices. The term has been so popularized in the past couple hundred years by the foreigners that the indigenous people came to refer to their culture and religion as "Hinduism." This can easily be verified by searching "the word Hinduism."

I use this video every morning in what I term my "morning tuning." As Jon Kabat-Zin compared meditation to the tuning of instruments, I try to begin each new day by tuning my "self" with the highest source.

Your simple, but highly effective presentation here, helps me to focus at the outset of a day with several governing principles, namely: ahimsa, anekantvad, apaprigraha, and the walk toward satya.

Thank you for sharing this with the world,

    Larry
