This documentary discusses the positive and negative affects of globalization on tourism. It focuses on the aspects of globalization that has to do with the movement of goods and services from country to country. The economies and cultures of host countries are hugely affected by the immense amount of American presence on these small islands. Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world because the globalization process has made it so easy and common. People come from around the world to witness the beautiful scenery and interesting cultures that these islands have to offer, without thinking about the affects they leave behind.
The documentary first discusses the positive affects of tourism. Globalization brings jobs and opportunities to the host countries that they would not ordinarily have available. American owned businesses and hotels like Margaritaville, Sandals Resorts, and the Hilton Caribbean allows locals to work. With more of the natives making money they are able to give back to their own economy, which adds to the countries standard of living. Tourism also increases other job markets like construction companies and the restaurant business. Many of these islands would not have access to these resources without the presence of tourism.
The negative affects of tourism are rarely talked about and not as obvious to the public. Our documentary bluntly describes the negative impacts and encourages people to think about how globalization affects all aspects of life. Globalization has taken a huge toll on each of these islands unique cultures. Although American owned businesses and hotels help boost up these islands economies, American culture is starting to take over. Many of their native languages are becoming extinct because there is such a huge need for English speaking workers. These islands have no choice but to depend on tourism to bring money into their economies, but should we as Americans be taking advantage of their need and allow their cultures to live in the past?
