Through natural selection our genes has developed to create enzymes that quickly destroy toxins before they reach a high level. The toxin in chocolate for instance may also have effect on our body, but our enzymes destroy it quickly. In dogs the toxin can stay in their body for over 24 hours, don't give your dog chocolate every day it might build up to a dangerous level. In our body the toxin is destroyed quickly, our organs are also adapted to a toxic diet and can take a lot of punishment.

This wasn't much of an answer to a "Why?" question, it was more of a "What toxins hurt dogs?". I'll tell you why so many toxins hurt dogs and not us. Dogs have had a meaty diet for millions of years, meat almost never contain toxins, especially a wolves diet. Natural selection has not played much of a role selecting for toxin tolerant genes. Humans on the other hand has had a very varied diet, mostly plants as apes, plants contains lots of toxins our body must handle, and we can handle them.

1oz of milk chocolate per 1lb of body weight is considered a dangerous amount for dogs. So my 80lb lab would have to eat 5lbs of milk chocolate to have a toxic reaction. I think "real chocolate" (bakers chocolate or semi-sweet) is like 1oz per 9oz of body weight, but I'm not too sure.
But I used to feed an old dog grapes all he time. No health problems; lived to be 15.
what the hell who feeds there dogs cookies? retards i tell you! retards!
