This is a fingerstyle interpretation of the folk and bluegrass classic Wildwood Flower. The tune dates from the 1800s, but was made popular by the Carter Family, and got a bit of a popular revival when Reese Witherspoon sang it in I Walk the Line, the Johnny Cash movie. I was messing with the tune flatpicking style, and started to wonder what it would sound like as a fingerstyle ballad instead of the bouncy way it's usually played. Others have played it fingerstyle - Chet Atkins, for example, but I wanted to think of it more like a Celtic ballad. The result is certainly a departure from the way it's usually heard, and I took a few liberties with the melody, but I hope it works. Played on a Don Sharp SJ, a stunning guitar - Ziricote and Italian Spruce, in DADGAD tuning. The studio version of this tune appears on the AGF "Hand Made Music" CD, http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188112 Tab is available free at http://www.dougyoungguitar.com/tabs.php

  • Certainly beautiful guitar work -- but I see no connection whatsoever between your piece and the classic American tune written before the Civil War and made famous by the Carter family sixty years later -- but maybe others do. (<:

  • @Mandolin1944 I think I'll have to do a lesson on this tune, play the melody at the Carter family tempo, then slow that melody down so people hear it slow, then add the embellishments. Should be a fun example. On my todo list

  • This is very beautiful, I really liked it. But one has to admit it was an interpretation inspired by the original, and while not exactly the same melody, very true to the original song. It's great to see these interpretations, thats what music is truly about. Keep up the good work, I loved shenadoah too.

  • @Appalachianbluegras2 Well, I did say it was an interpretation! There's certainly a melody here, it just might not exactly match the Carter family version down to every nook and cranny. This is a very old tune, and there are tons of variations. The Carters even changed the words! I see no reason to duplicate what's already been done, this was my own take, and it won't be for everyone. Sorry you didn't like it, but there are tons of other versions you can listen to instead.

  • Awesome! I just dream to play! Wonderful and very pleasant! You helped my day regardless of other opinions. Maybe you played it to help someone out here who needed it and that's the only reason. Thank you.

  • He did say: "the song is an interpretation of an old std! Nonetheless, exclt arrangement DY! What's more of interesting is; the showcasing of a great sounding & beautifully crafted guitar...

  • I'm so glad i built my latest guitar with ziricote. beautiful look and sound. good bass and treble, but very balanced. And it's purty

  • I see no reason to apologize to anyone. It was not the traditional done to death version, it was your rendition of a beutiful tune played on a beutiful guitar. Your embelishments were your creation as I play it with my embelishments. You were having fun with the song and shared it with us....Thank You. I'm a flat picker, using a 3 pickup Tele Nashville, customized for me, Chet didn't turn me on with his version but then niether did Mother Maybel....Keep it up.

  • Beautiful playing.
