The Wainwright challenge series part 2. A classic outing from the national trust campsite langdale incorporating the Bad Step and descending Bowfell via "The climbers traverse".
Comment. Allow 6 to 7 hours for this outing. An early strenuous climb chucks you up high quickly and then the going is pretty easy across the crinckles. The bad step is easy with a little exposure when you come out onto the right rib. A strenuous climb up onto bowfell and then a precarious descent down past the great slab (good conditions should be sought).
The final leg is "The climbers traverse". This is by far the best high level ledge traverse in the lake district. Good clear weather is what you want for this to appreciate the setting. This is not for the feint hearted as exposure is consderable in parts and a slip in the wrong place would be disastorous. In winter conditions an ice axe and crampons/rope is essential for the descent off Bowfell past the great slab and then again required for the climbers traverse.
This was our first time on the traverse and i wouldn't want to be on it in windy/wet conditions. The traverse is last leg of the walk and most folks will be feeling tired ,however its important that your concentration levels are at their highest for this bit. Once off the traverse you can relax and enjoy the descent down the band.
