folding a wing made of 3mm Depron:
You don't need heat for this method!
At the bottomside tape is applied at the folding edge to prevent the Depron from breaking.
I do NOT use the ruler to press a slot into the Depron. The slot is made before using a biro sliding alongside the ruler (you must press press the biro hard into the Depron). The slot has to be at least as deep as 1/2 of the thickness of the used Material (Depron: 3mm // slot 1,5mm +). In this video I just use the ruler to give the material a defined line where it should bend, furthermore bending is easier when you press the ruler into the slot.
My favorite glue for this application is Uhu Por. When the glue is applied at the ribs, the spar and the trailing edge you have to wait 10 minutes. If you don't wait long enough, the adhesion won't be strong enough.
Note: The TE is sanded as you can see in this pic: http://www.rc-network.de/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=584701&d=12938...
If you don't sand it, the airfoil will have kind of a S-shape. Since I don't build a flying wing I don't need that S-shape. And you can reduce the thickness of the TE if you sand one side of the Depron which is helpful for good aerodynamics (lower drag)!
Dear US-guys: I know you're mostly using that Blu-Core foam. I never worked with it, I only did this using Depron. So you will have to find out whether it works with Bu-Core, too. But I think it will work great...

  • That's a nice looking wing and a great fold ! Have you read about a wing called a KF wing on rcgroups dot com. Its a little different and easier way to do a wing and they fly great, but they are not as visually appealing as yours.

    Just look up Kline Fogelman

  • @pcaffeldt

Yep I know that Kline Fogelman airfoils. I don't have a RC-Groups account but i love reading all the nice build logs there. I saw a few planes using these KF wings. I know it works great and is very easy to build but I want my plane to look like a real plane - so I prefer normal airfoils. I mean... If the you look from a little distance you don't see it but if you look closely KF is not very beatiful. Just my 2c...

  • I'm just getting into depron, and this video was very helpful.

I will be trying this method very soon.

    Thanks so much!

Thx for the rating, I'm glad you like it! Try it out! You can let the ribs away if you want (for small wings). If you bend the bottomside down over the edge of the table you can get an airfoil with more camber. Symmetrical airfoils are possible too.

One thing I want to ask you as a native speaker: Is the text in the description ok? I mean... I always had good marks in english but this description requires kind of a "technical language" which was not really a topic in school...

  • Yes your description was very well worded and clear, except that here in Texas we do not use the word "biro".

I went to wikipedia to find out the rest of the world do use that term to referr to a ball point pen.

I did try to bend the foam/depron with just creashing it with a ruler, and not marking it with a ball point pen.

    It cracked.

I will try again, using a "biro" this time.

    Thanks again.

It's important that you first apply the tape (at the tension-side of the sheet)! Then you can make the slot (on the compression-side of the sheet). And make the slot deep enough!

Another important thing: The tape must be wide enough. I mostly use that 3M glassfiber-reinforced tape. That's really a good choice. And it has strong adhesion. Don't know how wide it is exactly but 1 1/2" up to 2" is ok. Not less please! Or you're gonna break the 2nd sheet too. :D

  • I'm about to start my first scratch built and it's little tips like this that make all the difference so thank you.

  • Hi. it's interesting methode, but I still not clear which parts sould be applied with tape?
