What they do there is called "Jugendweihe". This is an old German tradition (especially in eastern Germany it was and is still quite popular). When students are in the 8th grade (14-15 years old) they get "welcomed" in the world of the grown ups. Most of the time the whole school class participates and afterwords one celebrates with family and friends. It's not super cool to do it but one gets presents and money...that's why many teens like to do it anyway. So now you know.
