Machiavelli is a scenario of the popular strategic game Diplomacy.
http://www.historygamer.com/2010/04/04/board-game-machiavelli/

It is set in Renaissance Italy depicting the fueds between the various factions in Italy at that time.

At its simplest you could play standard diplomacy with up to eight players. Not all players are created equal in this game, but that's even more reason to gang up on the stronger factions.

However Machiavelli goes so much deeper by introducing money into the equation, now there are even more concerns to balance in your bid for power. Also (optionally) rules to cover revolt and famine can be introduced to make this a more intellectualy satisying game.

  • right now im playing and having difficulty in having a "feel" ot the territory and the other problem is i dont know if it is a good idea in venice to make a "conversion move" or leave it as a garrison. // i know with practice this kind of problems will go away.// i love the simplicity of diplomacy but have to admit machiavelli is very intriguing even when the site i play this is a new one and doesnt have yet the feature of money (onyly basic, excommunication, disasters and conquering)

  • @josedepr That will come with time i guess. Also the old adage in diplomacy and its variants to expand carefuly with a broad (protected) front (vs grabbing lone supply centres away from your main force) will probably serve you well. Yes the whole money thing was what attracted me to machiavelli in the first place.

  • you can play it online in machiavelli condottieri

  • @josedepr Oh excellent! Thanks for that.

  • Has anyone experience in playing this game? How did it compare with playing diplomacy? Do you prefer the extra rules or does it detract? Comments please.
