Kirsten Flagstad sings "Ove son...Ombre, larve, compagne di morte" from Alceste by Christoph Willibald Gluck The Geraint Jones Orchestra Geraint Jones, conductor recorded in 1956
I read in Culshaw's book that Flagstad was ill at the time of this recording. That may be, but all current sopranos should be so sick as to produce singing like this. Flagstad's voice was a miracle of the last century. It refused to ever be less than great. I find the singing on this recording to be exemplary --------- far beyond the reach of anyone now singing before the public.
I'm currently reading "the ring resounding" and yes, poor Kirsten had a terrible cold, but she was forced to continue and sang the whole of Alceste in very few days. The result, despite what Culshaw says, is glorious, as everything she did!

I guess it's possible that she was unwell, but my mother was at that recording and never mentioned it.

I read thet KF had a cold during this recording.
Here is the sick???? Flagstad at age 61 . I know a few singers who in A+ health in their 30s could not sound so glorious.
Addiobelpassato - many blessings for posting this incredible performance,
