A silent Video made by Alan Maynerd of Marion, Illinois showing the aftermath of the Tornado of "82"...I apparently had the video for years mixed in with some old family vids and didnt realize it until recently, excuse the quality, I copied the video from an old VHS tape using my iphone.... i thought i would share it after all these years ....On Saturday May 29, 1982 a large F4 Tornado slammed head on into Marion, Illinois around 3:15 PM from the Crab Orchard area just west of Marion.... My sisters husband at the time Alan had recorded the scene the next day....Im Richard Phillips....I presently reside in Southwest Kentucky but lived in Marion, Illinois from 1981-1984....I am a first hand eyewitness to the event that day....I had just graduated from Marion high school....several of us had a baseball game going on at the housing projects on the southside of town the afternoon of the 29th as a storm was building up just to the west, we spotted the tornado appear against a solid dark background of clouds in the distance, When we realized we were at a safe distance all we could do was watch it as it demolished its way through Marion, We could see what looked like cars swirling around in the funnel as it travelled along to the east and from where we were standing we could see buildings and houses literally explode.... The duration of which seemed to last about 15 minutes.... after it had passed several of us got in a friends car and made our way to East Deyoung street, we then headed east and followed the tornado halfway to Harrisburg pulling off to the side of the road and watched it dissappear before we turned around and headed back to Marion and then on to Shawnee apartments where my grandparents were living at the time...When we got to the apartments the entire area looked like a bomb had went off, a couple of rescue workers walked past me with a stretcher carrying out one of the unfortunate tornado victims, myself along with many others joined up with groups assisting in looking for anyone who may have been trapped in the debris ....Earlier that day i had taken my car to the shop at Jakes Tire & Recap for a tire alignment, It went in to the shop as a hardtop and came out a few days later as a convertible...the only thing standing at jakes was part of the chimney which someone wrote on "Gone East With The Wind"...My uncle George Williams was the city Police Commissioner at the time and helped victims and retrieving the bodies at Shawnee apartments....10 people died including a school buddy of mine Jimmy Gulledge and his girlfriend Lynn Moore who were both killed at Shawnee Apartments while visiting friends....My Mother and youngest sister were at the Walmart near the Town & Country shopping center when the Tornado hit, My grandparents survived their ordeal at Shawnee apartments by hiding under a stair well with several other residents, their apartment was on the top floor and their roof was completely blown off, There were metal boats wrapped around the tops of some of the trees near the apartments i assume that came from Crab Orchard lake....President Reagan declared Marion a National Disaster....
