A fantastic song written in 1927 by Milton Ager & Jack Yellen. This is definitely an American standard classic It has been recorded and performed by hundreds of artists. Here's a short list of some of the people who have done this over the years. If you know others, please add them to the list. If you know more information on the University Eight who does this version, it would be appreciated also.

  • This is indeed a Kirkeby "Varsity Eight" session, recorded on February 3, 1927.

  • wow ! What a rockin' version of this song, I think this is my favorite version, nice photos as well, just swell ! Thanks !

  • I checked the recording dates for several Varsity 8 records on Cameo and note that they are the same as the dance band renditions on Lincoln. However, the names of the dance bands on Lincoln are different. For example, "Last Night on the Back Porch" was recorded on 9/6/23 by the Varsity 8 on Cameo; the recording date is the same on Lincoln, but the band is the University 6. You can check this out exhaustively by comparing Cameo & Lincoln listings on the On-Line Discography.

  • Yup, just a listen tells me that The University Eight are the same as The Varsity Eight, = Wallace Ed Kirkeby = California Ramblers. So this is a pseudonym for Ed Kirkeby who also sings the vocal, that was a giveaway, along w/the Bb Bass Sax

(Adrian Rollini) Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey are probably on this record as well. Problem Solved! Cameos & Lincolns were part of the Plaza Group, Lincolns were the same as Cameos but Lincoln was for the East Coast, Cameos for the West Coast.

  • Thank you so very much! I'm certainly glad you like it. I know it's kind of worn, but when I find another copy, I'll post it too.
