Colorado Hummingbirds Close-up

Broad-tailed, Rufous, and Calliope hummingbirds in our yard. These hummers are fascinating to watch. Each year we get more and more; probably numbering over 150 now. Unfortunately our sugar bill is skyrocketing (6 cups per day!).

7/27/08 update: now 3 gallons/day of hummer food (about 5 lbs. of sugar) required and 14 feeders! Ouch! Anyone want to sponsor a hummer?

You're doing a very good thing, here. Mankind has been adamnantly trying to erradicate spieces of animals, taking their land and places where they get food from, and here you are, doing your best to stem the tide, as it were.

And, yes, so do I. Not so much with hummingbirds yet, but Junkos and rufus top sparrows, mourning doves, and, at end of winter, starlings.

The seed bill is outrageous.

I think there may be a way to get $ from the govt. for the work you do, though. I'm still looking.

WOW! It must be scary to try and change a feeder with that many birds. I live near Vail and thoroughly enjoy the birds here.
