The Convertible underwent many changes during its 30+ year run. One change thats not quite so noticeable is motor sound, of which several changes took place over the run of the original two speed motor. The first period went from 1958 to sometime in 1965. Models produced during this time were very quiet and had a similar motor timbre. In 1965 the timbre changed somewhat and became more growl-y and just a bit noisier than pervious models. This period went til about 1969 when the 4-position models were introduced. The '69-'71 Convertibles had their own unique timbre, with just a bit of a whistle as the motor winds up to speed.
The last variation came with the '71-75 models. The growl-y sound came back, but not as much as the '65-'69 models.
Here are 4 Convertibles to illustrate the different variations.

1- 1960 model 32(original Convertible sound)
2-1966 model 36(listen to this model growl compared to the model 32)
3-1970 model 1020(the sound of this model is almost musical, listen for the slight whistle as this one comes up to speed)
4-1974 model U4005(the growl is back, but not as loud as the model 36's)

The original motor was discontinued in 1975 and replaced with the new High Performance motor

  • Are you selling any of your convertibles?

  • @vacuumfreak Nothing is for sale at this time

  • The second model looks like the kind we had up until 1991 when we finally had to retire it and replace with a Heavy Duty Convertable model. It was sort of too bad because I kind of grew accoustomed to the motor sound, but I have ot say the Heavy Duty model has impressed me by how it has lasted just as long. What impresses me here is how those you have look so factory new.

  • @YouthfulElf Thanks for your nice words. They are factory new looking because each one has been completelt dismantled and cleaned and restored. Lots of work in some cases! I love the sound too!

  • I was just wondering what model the turquoise one is...

  • @vacuumfreak Thats model 36, 1966-67

  • I have the 2nd hoover

  • best vac for its time

  • What a wonderful family of Hoover Convi's! I am glad that they have someone to love them and care for them. They will be running long after the new stuff at Wal Mart is in landfill. The convertible was a real Hoover and was actually superior to the Flagship model Dial-a-Matic. The Convertible was much like the Old Hoovers that were of sound design. I have a model 26-28/305 collection. Best
