Its time to plant Fall potatoes. Hopefully by the time they start sprouting up the weather won't be so incredibly HOT!
I tried to repeat the same process I used for the spring planting, since that was successful. But I know there's no telling with potatoes! :-)

I'll fill in the holes and build them up as they grow.

  • Do you cover your potatoes as they grow? What do you cover them with if you do? Also, are you planting in the same bed as your previous crop of potatoes? Thanks!

  • @RocketCityGardener Yes, I cover them up with soil as they grow, its hard to tell the depth on the video.

Yes, I rotated from where I planted them last time, since potatoes are so simliar to tomatoes. I have some raised beds that are a little shallower in depth where the unamended clay layer is. I picked the most amended bed this time. HOpefully the looser soil will also help foster more potatoes. I really need to dig and amend some of those shallower beds deeper, maybe in early winter. :-)

  • Yea! Thank God for the rain. It wasn't a whole lot, but any was truly welcome.

    Good luck with the Potatoes!!!

  • @Planogardener Whew.. You're right! It was a bit of relief! I just wanted to get out there and do as much as I could to take advantage of the cooler weather! lol

I keep remembering that 5 days of straight ice we had in January... but.. lol that is little solace in given the relentless 100 temps.. sigh.

As Virgil says.. "Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit!" "Perhaps someday we shall be happy to remember these things!"

  • must. wear. gloves. LOL Can't wait to see the fall harvest video...woo hoo ! ;-)

  • @mhpgardener lollll did you notice they were new??? lol I go through alot of gloves.

Tractor Supply had some on clearance...picked up 3 pair for $3!

I hope I get some taters out of it! Not sure how fall success will be. Last year I planted them WAY too late and only got tiny ones. lol But that was a trial.. to learn for the spring. :-) lol yea i was practicing. lol

  • Hi. I have my spring potatoes sitting inside in the warm "chitting" because it is way too cold to plant out yet. Looking forward to new potatoes for Christmas. Our unusually mild winter has been rudely interrupted by a countrywide cold snap. Snow everywhere - even historically further north than ever before. I think we had a couple of flakes earlier today, but they melted before they could land - we are too far north for snow - normally. Enjoy your warmth. S :o)

  • @tdjtx Yes it rained an inch in the morning. Still a long way to go but I was grateful for it!

It was so good to have a cool day! Its back into the 100s again, but hopefully not too much longer. Fall has to come sooner or later! lol

    Good luck on the tomatoes!

  • Cool, I saw you'all got rain yesterday, I was hoping it would make it down here but it fizzled out as always. I planted my fall tomatoes this weekend, hopefully I get some this year, the spring tomatoes were a bust.

  • @baconsoda Thanks! I am still learning what works best for the spring and fall seasons. I won't even try to do brocolli anymore in the spring, it gets hot way too fast here. sigh

This hot weather has really fried my poor fall tomato plants. Hopefully they'll rebound in a couple weeks as the weather should cool off a tad.
