Part 2 of 6

A history of the racially stereotyped portrayal of African Americans in cinema. Written and narrated by Melvin Van
Peebles, director of "revolutionary" film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song

Van Peebles is no angel, his films have been called exploitative, but this history is powerful.

Watch ALL 6 PARTS to see how stereotyped representations have evolved from early cinema to today.

  • @FriedAbortions sounds to me like he wants a segregated society. He complains when theres a story a bout whites helping save an innocents black mans life, they all come together as human beings and stand on the side of right. that's a world we should all aspire to live in, but no mvp. he wants to constantly create dividing lines. if we continue this our future is doomed.

  • @pundar I get what you are saying but I think what MVP was trying to say was that Hollywood's message was "behind every strong black man is a stronger white man." because if it was not for the white man the black man wouldn't be where he is today I personally don't care about "whites helping blacks" thing because I'm gay and we are still having our own issues with Hollywood

  • @BlacknesUnforgivable so you would rather watch a film in which whites let a black man get lynched because only blacks can help blacks. I would rather live in a world where whites can help blacks and vice versa. I guess I'm just a nicer person. I'm also hispanic, and melvin van peebles is a hateful biter old man, if he wants to make a point he should quit bitching and make a film of his own.

  • @pundar Thats not uplifting. We dont need another movie about whites saving the helpless minority

And peebles only seems "hateful" to you because you are white and clueless.

  • @HillaryinNYC it'sa about a falsely accused black man and a group of white people out to help him clear his name. in the process they stop a lynch mob and save his life. Definitely not a racist film, i would say it's a head of its time especially since it was based on a book written in 1949. Van Peebles is very ignorant and hateful. Just another pissy old man.

  • @pundar What is it about?

  • obviously he never saw intruder in the dust
