Elvis Presley Milk Cow Blues Boogie
Written by James (Kokomo) Arnold. Elvis recorded it December 10, 1954 at Sun Records along with Bill Black and Scotty Moore. It was the A-side to Youre a Heartbreaker. It is available on The Complete Sun Sessions, A Date With Elvis, and The King of Rock n Roll-The Complete 50s Masters, which is where this version is from.

Well, I woke up this morning,
And I looked out the door.
I can tell that old milk cow
By the way she lowed.

Hold it fellows, that don't move me.
Let's get real, real gone for a change.

Well, I woke up this morning
And I looked out the door
I can tell that that old milk cow
I can tell the way she lowed.

Well, if you've seen my milk cow,
Please ride her on home.
I ain't had no milk or butter
Since that cow's been gone.

Well, I tried to treat you right,
Day by day.
Get out your little prayer book
Get down on your knees and pray.
For you're gonna need,
You're gonna need
your loving daddy's help someday.
Well, then you're gonna be sorry
For treating me this way.
Ah lets milk it
Yeah

Well, believe me, don't that sun
look good going down?
Well, believe me, don't that sun
look good going down?
Well, don't that old moon look lonesome
When your baby's not around.

Well, I tried everything to
get along with you.
I'm gonna tell you what I'm going do.
I'm gonna quit my crying,
I'm gonna leave you alone.
If you don't believe I'm leaving,
you can count the days I'm gone.
I'm gonna leave.
You're gonna need your
loving daddy's help someday.

Well, you're gonna be sorry
You treated me this way.

  • THIS VOICE IS FOR SURE REVOLUTIONARY!!!

  • I sure do love the Rockabilly tunes Elvid did back in 1954-55 at Sun Records with Sam Phillips. For me, those 20 plus tunes were the best that Elvis recorded!!!!!

  • Boy

  • Perfection. Thanks again for posting.

  • This is awesome because it has my two favorite things Elvis and Cows!!!!!!!! 😃

  • eLVIS was the greatest creative bad ass I have ever listened to.

  • This is everything that 'I Feel So Good' by Nick Cave and 'Steamroller Blues' by James Taylor isn't....

  • 4 people dont no who is loose your milkcow

  • Amazing how "elastic" this voice is! In Milk Cow Blues Boogie Elvis covers both the white "yeehaw-cowboy-style" and the black ecstatic blues-gospel style, and all the universe in between. He blends it as if it was all the same. I think this is the very first recording in history with a white singer doing black melisms (at 1:39 and 1:51 for instance). In times of strict race segregation this artist must have been very disturbing and even threatening for parts of the society.

  • So much power in less than three minutes. Just magic.

  • That is pure brilliance - a voice making music in the most basic and effective way you could imagine. Great minimalism.

  • Elvis changed the face of music for ever, I just wish it woulda stayed on top in my generation to. Long live the king.
