This is from the GET TRACKSIDE series. These are the first railroad videos I shot and assembled. They used to be posted on YouTube, but later I deleted the account. I would like to re-post them here to show some of my original work. At the time I was just starting out using a standard-def JVC camera. These are a few years old.

This video is shot near Highway 80 and the Gold Ranch Casino. It shows Amtrak's California Zephyr 5 pulling a private car, the Santa Fe Chico.

Yes, I should have turned the camera toward the train as it passed. I have two explanations: 1) I was new at this and 2) I was busy getting still photos. I took one of my best photos ever as the locomotive crossed the bridge.

Thanks for watching, to follow my latest videos please subscribe to this channel. I am currently working on a new Virginia and Truckee video, the Unauthorized Biography of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. I will be updating various websites including:

  • What JVC Did you use my JVC Everio got stolen

  • @UP5140SD70M I forget, it's been a couple-three years since I've used it. It was a fairly high-quality model when I bought it maybe five years ago or more. Sorry to hear about your camera, that sucks.

  • In this comment I get to highlight two railfan warnings. Most people go to the end of Quilici Ranch Road and park by the rocks. You will then be on the other side of this bridge. I have seen many people walk across this bridge and nearly get killed, DON'T DO IT!!! In late 2007 two people rode horses across this bridge, an eastbound freight snuck up on them and killed the horses.

To get to this spot, going east on I-80 just before the Gold Ranch Casino exit, there is a gap in the guardrail...

  • Man where do you park to get down to this spot? I know the I-80 is directly to your left...

  • Part II of response, the first part showed up as a separate comment ... you can pull off I-80 just past the guardrail and there's a dirt road that parallels the tracks for awhile.

DISCLAIMER TO THE GENERAL READER: Pulling off I-80 in a turnout when traffic is behind you is STUPID!!! DO NOT slow down on I-80 unless you are totally in the clear, it's easy to start a chain reaction accident.

I tend to speed at least 1/2 mile ahead of any traffic and slow abruptly to make the exit.
