In this video, you will first hear the original "Cloud Level" song from Donkey Kong Land composed by Dave Wise and Graeme Norgate, and then you will hear the arranged, "orchestrated" version by me, Chris Lowry.
The original song was recorded from a Gameboy Advance into a Sony MZ-R55 Minidisc Recorder and then into the computer via line-in.
All screenshots were taken with the Visual Boy Advance emulator.
Video was made using the MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 11.
All notation was done in Sibelius 4, and all samples/synthesized sounds are recorded from Sibelius using the Kontakt Player Gold, Rock and Pop, and Garritan Personal Orchestra sound libraries. All live instruments were performed and recorded by me using the Minidisc Recorder and a Sony ECM-DS70P Stereo Electret Condenser Microphone.
All effects (e.g. reverb, delay) are done in MAGIX, and all mixing is done in Audacity. The white noise you hear at the end is also done in Audacity.
The arranged version is essentially the same as the original except with added chords, harmony, and some colorful percussion added the second time through. Also, instead of using the melody with delay from the original, I took some of the more important notes from the delay and added them to the melody itself. Doubling the chords heard in the strings is a synth pad that has been adjusted so that its overtone series is somewhat exposed, causing it to arpeggiate. Other flourishes I have added are the horns' continuation of the harps' rhythmic motif in the "chorus," a few drum fills and the driving eighth-note pulse of a ride cymbal in the "chorus," and a broken-down version of the "verse" at the end.
Following is a list of the instruments/sounds used.
