Sake is rice wine, though it is brewed like beer. Traditionally it is 18-23% alcohol, But normally when bottled (like beer) it is diluted with water down to 15% alcohol.
I live in Japan and I have visited a few places where they make it. If you get sake here from a local on the island, you will probably be fucked up after only 2 bottles. Its strong stuff
