This was our parents' "9/11" back then, and I cannot imagine what that had to be like...the devastation, the grief, the chaos, coupled with delayed and limited access to communications, no "instant technological" relays. Everyone had to wait for telegrams, phone calls, wires... The only thing that has stayed the same is the struggle and loss for words, and understanding of any of it.

Very interesting to see these early days of tv news as the assassination unfolds. But, relatively speaking, it's not that different from the coverage of 9/11; the confusion, the false reports (JFK - secret service firing back, secret serviceman killed, etc.; 9/11 - fires, car bombs, etc.) and the slow realization of the scope of the events.

I WATCHED THIS LIVE..I WAS IN THE SIXTH GRADE, THEY TOLD US WE COULD GO HOME. I WAS FOR NIXON BACK THEN, I REMEMBER WATCHING THE DEBATES...A FEW MONTHS LATER THE BEATLES SHOWED UP ON ED SULLVAN, A FEW YEARS LATER I WAS A TEENAGE KID WITH LONG HAIR, A VEGETARIAN, I HAD TAKEN DRUGS, I HAD TAKEN A TRIP ACROSS THE COUNTRY ON MY MOTORCYCLE, WE WENT THE MOON..I DISCOVERED YOGA AND EASTERN PHILOSOPHY, I USED TO LISTEN TO DYLAN, I BECAME A LIBERTARIAN,I BECAME A CONCIENCIOUS OBJECTOR, GOD DAMN THE 60'S

I was 12 when this happened and it is hard to put into words how shocking all of this was. I remember every detail of those days as the events unfolded. And I'll never forget.

@gaguy1967 Wirephotos were old stuff by then! Matter of fact, people think we didn't have "instant" communication in those days, but we did, by telephone and telegraph. Not to mention live radio coverage. Radio was way ahead of TV in many respects. The only live coverage of the motorcade was on radio. Look up "KLIF coverage JFK assassination".

@4807avh Wirephoto, transmission of pictures by wire, had been around since 1924. They were used by news services and police. Do a Google search on "transmitting pictures by wire". It's fascinating.

@blueguitarblue Of course. The assassin was "colored."

huh? who are you talking to, i never replied to your comments.
Walter Cronkite was the greatest news anchor in the history of American television, and tjhe tragic events of November 22, 1963 would confirm his status.
Walter had excellent ad-lib skills that an anchor needs during breaking news coverage like this.
