An orangutan could 'speak' using 30 different signs, naming a hat, a wristwatch or a flower. From NATURE'S FROM ORPHAN TO KING airing November 25th at 8pm EST on PBS (check local listings.) Kidnapped as a baby by hunters who killed his mother, Kusasi, a orangutan, is rescued by police, only to face a different kind of confinement.
But he escapes that too, and somehow miraculously survives in the jungle at an age when a solitary infant would almost certainly face a cruel death. In time, Kusasi rises to become the ruler of his domain. Actor Tim Matheson narrates. For more information, visit http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/orphantoking/index.html

Nobody would eat anything that ugly. But they do get captured and/or beaten to death for stealing food from farms (understandable for any poor farm family with kids to feed). Although I did overhear some people on Sumatra joking that they had eaten an orangutan the night before. The Europeans were horrified. The Indonesians had a good laugh on them.
