"Act as known ..." This was the way specialty acts were contracted to perform on the great world Vaudeville/Variety circuits i the years from 1900 to 1960 before television closed thousands of theatres. Many of the best specialty acts were Australian and they toured the world taking their special skills to the beautiful theatres which were once to be found in every city. It was the most popular form of entertainment and filled the large theatres twice daily or twice nightly in every continent.
A husband-and-wife team, London-born contortionist Hector Napier (c.1886-1965) and Australian-born dancer Dorothy Yvonne (1888-1966) perfected this act, The Spider and the Butterfly, from about 1913. This film, while not a complete record of the act, provides a valuable record of a distinct form of entertainment. It was made in the USA in 1920.
Thanks for this.
Their daughter Valentyne Napier performed a solo acrobatic/contortion act called "Little Miss Muffet" in which she also wore a spider costume, her act was on a UV back-lit web. Must have been a great act. Never been able to find any footage of this clip though. She later wrote a book called "Act as Known".
