Show Notes: When I painted I would start by putting down a layer where the colors did not work together. I tried to come up with as messy and as problematic a color combination as I could. Then, when I started the next layer on top of the first my creativity was not about making something but about solving problems. The problem solving mode of creativity is very effective. Sometimes it's better to be creative about solving problems than it is to be creative about making something new. Creativity is very good about solving problems do give it a problem to get it to kick into gear. This approach is also useful for taking you into directions you never would have gone otherwise. I will push you into new areas. You can use this creative approach with any medium, writing, acting, dance, Etc. Send your art out of bounds, then real it back in. It can create spontaneity, surprise and complexity in you art. It can add to the enjoyment. Being human we have the tendency to think along the same lines and repeat the same patterns. Look at things the same way. By making an artistic mess and then cleaning it up and making it work we push ourselves out of our usual way of looking at things and into unknown territory and into new regions of how we are making our art. The final result has some of the traces of the underling mess and has complexity that it wouldn't otherwise have. A problem artist have is, they want to make good art but there is built in pressure that we want to get over of wanting to make the art good from start to finish. By making bad art by making wrong art by making art that we know does not work, that is a great way to become comfortable working with art that is not fully formed, and learning to enjoy it. We don't' want to avoid bad art. We can create better art by working with messes. Invite randomness, invite serendipity.

I also like to use complex percussion lops as single 'notes' playing back a melody, creating brilliant mayhem to (hopefully) grow a musical pearl around.
As far as drawing and painting, I too am the overpainter type. If nothing else, it'll rid you of blank page syndrome!

Many thanks for this one and I can absolutely second this. I apply this technique in all arts I dabble in (drawing, digital painting, music). There's nothing quite like randomness to kick off an idea.
Since you've asked about other mediums – I sometimes will record crappy/nonsensical performance, then sample it and use it as a loop. Little if anything of the original material will make it into the final mix but it definitely informs the result.
