  • why is it named the munkatch yeshiva choir? where is this?? is it named after my city Munkachevo??

  • From the Chanuka Menorah lighting of Munkach Grand Rabbi at the main synagogue in Brooklyn.

Grandfather of current grand rabbi was respected world-wide as a leader of Jewish community prior to WWII. "Munkatch" is Yiddish pronunciation of the name for that city. "Munkachevo" in Hungarian. The contemporary Jewish community in Munkacho benefits from the guidance and support of the current grand rabbi, along with periodic visits in person.

  • I thought that city was located in Ukraine

  • It is in Ukraine. But from what I have heard- and I might have to corroborate this- the boundaries of pre WW2 Hungary were larger than they are now.

Munkács was a city in Northern Hungary between 896 and 1918. In in 1919 it was awareded to the newly created czechoslovak state, than it returned to Hungary in 1939 until 1945 when Stalin took it and linked it to Ukrainian SSR so that the Soviet Union would have a direct border with one of its new puppet state, the communist Hungary. After the collapse of the CCCP it still remained with Ukraine like many other hungarian cities.

Sorry, but we hungarians call it Munkács. The russians/ukrainians/other slavs currently residing there call it Munkachevo. As far as I recall our ancestors called it Munketsch when they spoke yiddish (very rarely, rather spoke hungarian). The boys choir sings very beautifully anyway, thank you for sharing it.

  • ok thank you very much for the info and you did a great job filming this video
