Environmentalists in Copenhagen launched a mock award ceremony on Tuesday. They are denouncing the influence of corporate lobbyists on efforts to tackle climate change.

World leaders are due to gather in the Danish capital over the next two weeks. The goal is to reach an agreement that will see rich and developing countries sharing the burden in fighting climate change.

Already the sheer size of the measures needed, and splits between rich and poor about who should pay, mean an historic U.N. pact may be put off in favor of a less binding "declaration."

The conference runs from December 7-18 and will draw 15,000 officials, campaigners and journalists, making it the biggest climate summit yet.

The Angry Mermaid organization found inspiration for its name in the landmark mermaid statue that gazes towards Copenhagen harbor.

[Elizabeth Bast, Friends of the Earth International]:
"We're here today with the Angry Mermaid Award, an award we're using to expose the biggest corporate lobbyists in the climate negotiations here. We've got a vote going on to figure who is the biggest negative influence in the climate talks here.

Eight lobby groups representing oil, coal, aviation, the chemicals industry and emissions trading have been shortlisted for the Angry Mermaid Award, alongside biotech company Monsanto, oil giant Shell and energy company Sasol.

Members of the public can vote for the award in an online forum.

[Elizabeth Bast, Friends of the Earth International]:
"We will find out next week who the award goes to. We've got a vote that will close at the end of the climate talks next week and we will have an award presentation then.

The winner will be announced on December 15th.

  • Gee! I wonder which environmental group was included? World Wildlife Fund? Sierra Club? Greenpeace? They're corporate entities, and they negatively affect climate change negotiations.

  • 1: higher temperatures cause CO2 increase, not the opposite.

2: temps have fallen the past 10 years while CO2 continues to rise.

3: periods of much warmer/cooler weather (and higher/lower CO2) have existed over 20,000+ years.

4: planets warm/cool together, which means warming/cooling is primarily caused by the sun.

We need 100% separation of science and state.

    Government funded science == propaganda.

Plants absorb CO2 and emit O2.

    Hang climate totalitarians.

    End lies & pollution.

  • Besides, they already have a global currency they can use to trade and is already being created: "Carbon Credits" that could later just be shortened to "Credits"...

  • I think that since money is not stable, don't include it as part of the climate change solution. People with more money have more power than people with little money.

All countries should be equally treated here since we are all equal.

  • Socialist Globalists (Regressives) had to create this FALSE emergency before the people would accept Social-Fascist Corportist SLAVERY & the redistribution of money & power FROM the people TO Global Bankers, the Corporations they own & the corrupt politicians & Special Interest Groups they control through contributions.

$Trillions will be redistributed for "Green" technologies and CO2 trading schemes PLUS all the political power to be concentrated in Global Govt & New Global Financial Order.
