The French composer Jean Henri Ravina (1818-1906) studied (and later taught) at the Paris Conservatoire (his piano teacher there was Pierre Zimmerman, who also taught Franck and Alkan). He became a touring virtuoso in the first half of the 19th century, touring France Spain and Russia. His work deserves to be played today - his style comes across as an attractive blend of John Field and Charles Gounod. These three studies are selected from the set of 25 - note the extreme arm crossings in the Spanish-tinged No. 10. - you would be totally unaware of that listening to a CD of the piece!

Funny, I hear a corresponding of the nos. 9, 10, 21 to his tour in France (elegance), Spain (the crossing is like Scarlatti in Spain and all the other dance-elemnts) and Russia (the desperate and dramatic, almost operatic-aria main theme).
It's beautiful and beautifully played.
