More than 50 years ago, new trends in caring for victims of serious injuries, including burns, showed that patients had a much greater chance of survival if they were treated at specialized facilities, where treatment would be given by a specially trained health care professionals who work together as a team.
Influenced by this philosophy, the Regional Burn Center opened in 1959 at Columbia St. Marys Hospital (now Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Milwaukee) making it the first burn center in Wisconsin. Each year, the 12-bed center provides care for 150 to 250 children and adults from eastern Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and northern Illinois.
