I prefer this to Bowlly's version because of the preamble prior to the main melody. Does anyone know if this opening verse was written by the composer or added later. Down by the River is another example: I've never heard a recording other than Crosby's with the opening verse.

Well, I don't at all know for sure, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd imagine that the opening verses were written along with the rest of the songs for the Bing Crosby movies and then later were usually dropped as is often the case (unfortunately).
