Composer and inventor Tod Machover argues that musical notation is nothing more than "a way of remembering what you did so that you can do it again." He ties that to a piece of software he created called Hyperscore, which allows children to write sophisticated music using basic lines and color.

-----

Tod Machover, composer, inventor, and professor of music and media at MIT, discusses the many ways in which technology is transforming music. He describes his work in making music creation more accessible to everyone, as well as upcoming projects ranging from a robotic opera to musical tools to track Alzheimer's disease. - Aspen Institute

Tod Machover is a composer and inventor, as well as professor of music and media at the MIT Media Lab, where he also directs the Hyperinstruments/Opera of the Future group.

Machover has composed five operas and helped to develop many groundbreaking musical technologies, including Hyperinstruments, a technology that augments musical expression for both virtuosi (from Yo-Yo Ma to Prince) and amateurs, and Hyperscore, software that allows anyone to create sophisticated, original music by using lines and colors.

Many of Machover's principles about "active participation" in music are exemplified in Guitar Hero, which grew out of his lab, as well as through the recently launched Music, Mind & Health initiative.

Among his current projects is a new opera, Death and the Powers, complete with a musical chandelier, animatronic walls, and an army of robots.

  • @reddysrinivas1 @takotheoktopus Don't you understand this is to get children motivated to learn music?

  • @reddysrinivas1 are you fucked up in the head?

  • "The rules of music"

    Fuck off.

  • his mother is amazing

  • @reddysrinivas1 its not to bad actually. you could creat prity intresting pieces and it gives you the option to print the sheet musical notes for it so it could be played by reall people like at the end of the video.

  • bullcrap draw in a piano roll it makes music idiot

  • Neat -- but giving them real little instruments to play with still seems better.

  • I think this is a great idea. It really encourages little kids to engage in music and it's more fun than having to write everything down in real notation, which I know from experience is a pain. It's also much easier for kids to play around with all the different colors instead of having to think in quarter notes and sixteenths. I wish I had had this when I was a kid. =(

  • Awesome idea. It's just too bad that it costs $79. I can't see too many parents paying that much for this software.

  • How is it inhumane for parents to encourage their children to embrace and create music? It was awesome for me because my mom taught us that even though you might not be good that's no excuse for you not to try. Just enjoy it and let the music fill your soul.
