This wasn't her best performance in this recital. She really shone in the Strauss lieder and in a quite jazzy but genuinely beautiful Summertime, but this "Bel raggio" sounds quite sloppy and sometimes messy in the coloratura. That said, I think Fleming has sung extremely beautiful and accurate Bel Canto arias and roles throughout her career. And her voice and legato still sound fresh and rock solid.

Quelle horreur! Fleming a détruit la belle musique de Rossini.

Always love Fleming, the voice, the music, the emotion! She is not just a soprano, she is a really DIVA!! By the way, the flutist, what was he doing with his head? Isn't it so funny? Lol

This amazing brava Renee. A true artist never ground their self to one thing. That's why shes a living legend today.

This is simply no longer her rep: the coloratura in the middle voice won't move, and she needs to breathe every measure. The tessitura is simply too low for her. Why she chose to sing this this is a mystery. And I adore her. She needs to leave this aria alone.

I love her, but this piece was horrible
her voice is no longer suited for belcanto.. she should sing more dramatic soprano roles as Tosca, Aida, maybe Mimi would be a great success..

@distefano13069609 You must be kidding, either that or you just had a big portion of something illegal. This woman could not get through Aida or Tosca. She gave up Mimi by the time she came to the Met. The best we can hope now is more Strauss and hopefully some light Wagner. Her voice could still do Mozart well, but she is no longer interested in singing his music.

I think the rendering is great. I mean, you feel the character in there, and that is the way Ms Fleming conceives belcanto.

@doncarlo84 But the problem with that statement is that bel canto is not something that is rendered through a "vision". Bel canto has a very specific set of rules and practices. The artist renders his/her "vision" of bel canto through the use of ornamentation, not by bending or completely shattering the rules set. Ms. Fleming has publicly said she is not a specialist, and this will always be a handicap of her belcanto: Others will do it better than her because she doesn't know how to do it.

@tenore23
I totally agree with you, and I think that her voice and vocal technique are not suited to belcanto as they are to other repertoires. Nonetheless I find her approach to belcanto very smart. In some cases she reached great results: just think about her 1993 Armida. What do you think about that rendering?

@doncarlo84 I disagree. I think her voice & technique would have made her a great belcantista, but she chose not to become a specialist. She has a great trill, had fantastic facility on passage work, great breath control & a decent sense of legato. She had all the building blocks to be an amazing belcantista, what prevented her was her brain. She never understood the principles of belcanto & never developed good taste in performing it. Her 93 Armida is very good, but that was a lifetime ago
