Professor Harry Smith is a Vice-President of the EES and has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as Edwards Professor of Egyptology, UCL and field director of a series of EES projects (more info: http://tinyurl.com/yepa9u7 ).

Professor Smith was interviewed as part of the Society's Oral History Project (http://tinyurl.com/ljbrxd ) in March 2009. Here he talks about the now-lost fortress site of Buhen in Egyptian Nubia, which the Society was excavating as part of the UNESCO rescue campaign (http://tinyurl.com/yd7beuk ). In addition to a series of images from the Society's archives, this film also features footage shot by EES member Dr Anthony Hovenden during a visit to Buhen in 1962, in which members of the EES expedition, including Bryan Emery, David O'Connor and Anthony Mills, can be seen.

The Society is extremely grateful to Professor Smith for sharing his reminiscences, to Dr Hovenden for allowing the Society to use his film, to Dr Alice Stevenson for transcribing the interview, and to the members of the Amelia Edwards Group for providing the funds to allow the Oral History Project to go ahead.
