I was expecting Ivan Dragon in this game... after all, he was a "real" videogame character.

I think they invented the name "Soda Popinski" as a bit of a sly nod as to how some people create harmless-sounding nicknames for drugs or in this case, alcohol. I always throw a couple of imaginary sarcastic quotation marks round the word "soda" whenever I see it.
