Maybe I'm wrong, but I wonder if it is a function of the region they work in?, like the old SP units. The west coast SPs were notorious for their grime as a function of the mountain ranges/tunnels/snowsheds they worked, but you don't see as much of that on the prairie units, you know? The UP units here in the midwest are typically well kept that I have seen. HOWEVER, I do not have the same opportunity to observe as you do. :)
"...UP places a lot of weight on image, and locomotives are "THE" image of a railroad...." As an SP engineer I can say that is not even close to the truth. Have you seen the FILTHY UP locomotives and the graffiti all over the flag units? Yep, UP really cares about the brand identity.
Have you looked at any UP units lately?! they're cinderblocks LOL!!! I think they somewhat lost that arrogent philosophy after operating in espee territory for awhile.UP found out what operating in REAL MOUNTAIN TERRITORY is like lol!!!!!
clean only because this is after UP purchased SP and recently "patched" these units. SP had no money or care about clean locomotion, UP places a lot of weight on image, and locomotives are "THE" image of a railroad.... I much rather the grimy SP units myself. That looks like a hard working blue collar I'll do everything I can for you RR. UP looks like a prima donna riding around in a limosine telling you how much better they are than all you pee-ons
Fantastic capture :)
