Manga University brings you a face-to-face tutorial from Atsuhisa Okura, author of "Moe USA" and illustrator of "50 Things We Love About Japan."

In this workshop, Okura-sensei will demonstrate how to apply screen tones to manga drawings, and even show off a couple of his more advanced techniques! You'll even get a sneak peek of some panels from the forthcoming book "Moe USA Vol. 3."

Want to have your own drawings looked at and even re-drawn by a professional manga artist? It's easier than you think!

  • cant they use phothoshop for this?

  • @anatsuken Yes, they can (and do) use Photoshop. But first it's necessary to learn how to do it manually. Plus, hand-applied screen tones look waaaaaay better than computer-generated tones. Frankly, the computer-generated tones look cheap and artificial.

  • @mangauniversity Hey, do you know if artists like Masashi Kishimoto or Tite Kubo use computer based editing software? I want to start getting serious with my work but I'm pretty conflicted because I want to see first if I could copy their style (and obvious develop my own on my way) and I see everyone on the internet saying things like "It's impossible to make a good manga without editing software". Anyway, what's your opinion on the matter?

  • @notlengthy It's definitely possible to make good manga without using software. The only people who say it's "impossible" are those who are trying to sell you the software!

We do sell manga editing software on our website, but it's not mandatory that everyone use it. Some of the best artists in the world created their masterpieces long before software was ever developed :-)

  • @mangauniversity - but surely if you are making a manga that is going into print you do it on a computer... this method is just used for 'one of a kind' manga's or limited editions, right?

  • @JeremyScottThompson Actually, no — this method is used for manga all the time. Some Japanese manga artists do use computer tones, but many more apply screen tones the old-fashioned way, by hand. In fact, of all the books Manga University has published, only half used computer tones.

  • Im lazy so i wud not do good at doing all that stuff wid the tones

  • Takes way to long...

  • Man, talk about wet behind the ears... but I never thought screen tones were applied this way. When I hear "Screen Tones", it makes me think it's done on the computer mainly.

  • I just got my first screentone for my manga while I was opening my Christms gifts. I was really happy since I was getting tired of my drawings feeling "incomplete" due to the tones being rather...Bland..

  • @notlengthy Masashi Kisimoto made the the whole series only with computer exept the first four or five.

  • Thanks for the vid, I've been wondering how screentone's done for a while

  • @mangauniversity

I tried this method, but i ended up scratching my paper. Tips?

  • Wow, it's amazing how people can do this (:

    I'll probably mess up xD.

  • @notlengthy I believe they use traditional tools :)
