I'm crazy about this song, once again Nick Cave and his band is blowing my mind !

Please can you help me understand a little the song, because english is not my first language.

It seems to talk about a man in a psychiatric hospital, something like that ?

But I don't understand the line " Just how long you gonna be my baby", it's simple but a little weird to understand.

Is the "baby" the drug's hospital or something ?

Pure brilliance - on so many levels. One of the most amazing songs I have heard in a long time. Most of the reviews for Grinderman 2 seem to mention this song and now I understand why.

Lot going on here. It gets confusing because the lyrics alternate between a narrator and the protagonist. Essentially, it's an old woman in a nursing home overcome with loneliness reflecting on the time she was raped at 15 and comparing - favorably it would seem - the horrific moment with her current wretched and loneley station in life. As awful as rape is at least she was being touched by someone. Of course that argument crumbles and implodes on itself just as the song does.

It can be a girl yeah...or not....oh that's why I love Nick so much...so much...

@MademoisellleF This song is about a 15 year old girl who gets raped and becomes pregnant. The line "just how long you gonna be my baby" refers to the fact that she's going to have to give the baby up.

I always assumed this tune was about a girl getting raped and now in an institution for trauma. "They entered into me." "My skirt over my head." "I was so much older when I crawled out..". Maybe?
