Did you ever wonder where Japanese words came from? Word origins are not only an interesting way to see how language developed, but it is also great for remembering vocabulary. In this series, we will show you the origins of some common words and phrases in the Japanese language.

Do you know the first thing you say when you wake up in Japan? Do you know where this phrase comes from? In lesson two, you will learn the greeting for the morning and where it came from.

  • you can also say: ohayou gozaimasu, right? that's more polite i guess.

  • Yes, ohayou gozaimasu is the more polite way to say "good morning" :)

  • Did you know that the word "Good-bye" was originally shortened way of saying "God be with ye"?

  • @TLoZfanatic The big ang small japanese letters, you mean? the big ones are Kanji. The small ones are hiragana. the small ones are sometimes placed on top of the kanji characters because not all japanese can read kanji. :)

    For now, let us stick to the easier characters, the hiragana(small ones) :)
