Nuwan Gunasekara, driven by the goal of supporting his mother who was widowed when his father was killed in a period of political unrest, recognised the potential for a business opportunity when he began to produce Coir, a valuable material made from coconut husks which is viewed as waste in Sri Lanka. He came up with a business plan and presented it to the Hambantota youth business trust who gave him the loan he needed. By January 2008 he employed 13 staff, 2 of whom are widows and the sole providers for their family. He is ambitious, and ultimately aiming to turn his enterprise into a larger scale business.
