Around 0145 hours, Newark FD responded to 198 Ferry Street for a structural fire. The fire went to 5 alarms and spread to 4 adjoining buildings. The fire started in the building at the corner of Ferry and Polk. The fire extended into the cockloft and spread to exposure Bravo, Bravo1, 2 and 3.

60 people were left homeless and 1 firefighter and 1 civilian were injured.

While NFD was fighting this fire, a building fire came in at 0300 hours for Ferry Street and Foundry Street. Newark Ladder 12 arrived and reported a fully-involved building and requested a 2nd alarm. Engines from Belleville, Orange, South Orange and Irvington responded in to assist NFD ladders 12 and 6.

It was a busy night for Newark firefighters.

  • WOW .-.

  • Crazy night. The Newark FD and PD did an amazing job while shorthanded. Residents did their part as well. I'm very proud to be a resident of the Ironbound. A true community in every sense of the word.
