Within the traditional pattern of the mat exercises is an ideal pattern of movement--flexion, extension, side bending, rotation, and torsion. When you teach Pilates and follow the progressive pattern found in the traditional mat you are teaching into the the ideal of the method. This allows you to teach appropriately and creatively to the body in front of you and still be teaching towards the ideal of the method.
